Planning your ceremony should be just as exciting as the big day itself, but I know the legal paperwork and logistics can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming.
To help you get started, I’ve put together answers to the questions I get asked most often—so we can keep things simple, stress-free, and focused on celebrating your story.
How much notice do we need before getting married?
In Australia, the law requires you to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with me at least one calendar month before your wedding date. This official document can be completed up to 18 months in advance, so I always recommend getting it sorted early to ensure everything is locked in legally.
What documents do we need?
To get the paperwork started, you will need to show me either your valid passport or your official birth certificate accompanied by a government-issued photo ID like a driver’s licence. Additionally, if either of you has been married before, you will need to provide original copies of your divorce or death certificates to legally prove you are free to marry.
Can we legally marry anywhere?
Generally yes—Australia is incredibly flexible, meaning we can celebrate your day at traditional wedding venues, stunning wineries, local parks, or even right in your own backyard. Just keep in mind that public spaces like beaches and council parks often require a local permit, which you will need to secure ahead of time.
Can I get married on Zoom (or another video chat platform)?
No, Australian law strictly dictates that virtual or legally binding online weddings are not permitted. A couple must be physically present in the exact same location as me, your celebrant, along with two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign the paperwork.
How long before the wedding should I book you?
Because popular weekend dates fill up incredibly fast during peak wedding seasons, I highly suggest reaching out as soon as you and your venue have agreed on a date. Booking early ensures you secure your preferred time slot and gives us plenty of time to collaborate on personalising your ceremony.
